Grammar rules: Both "say" and "tell" are used to refer to someone's words. "Say" can be used in both direct ("He said, 'Go home'") and indirect speech ("He said I should go home"), while "tell" is typically used in indirect speech only. The difference between "say" and "tell" in indirect speech is the use of indirect object with "tell" ("He told me I should go home").

Grammar rules: "Lie" (="to rest") and "lay" (="to put") are verbs that are often confused. It's worth remembering that "lie" (past forms: lie - lay - lain) is an intransitive verb (it never takes an object), while "lay" (past forms: lay - laid - laid) is a transitive one and never stands alone. Therefore, you can say "The keys lie on the table", but "He lays the keys on the table".
Another verb that sometimes gets confused with those two is "lie" (="tell a lie"). It's a regular verb - its past forms are: lie - lied - lied.
